In a push to realize an ambitious raft of housing policy, Utah REALTORS® launched a campaign called Getting Homeownership in Utah Back on Track. The effort was a success: all its priority bills passed, the legislature authorized an additional $20 million in funding for first-time homebuyers, and an innovative partnership was formed to develop affordable housing on excess state land. An Issues Mobilization grant from the REALTOR® Party helped make it happen.

In Utah, as in many western states, water rights are highly complex, and conducting transactions without a complete awareness of their ins-and-outs is highly risky, both for agents and their clients. Last year, the Iron County Board of REALTORS® used a Rural Outreach Grant to offer a three-hour course online, providing REALTORS® and affiliates throughout the state with manuals, forms, and three continuing education credits at no cost.

For five years, the Utah Association of REALTORS® has been working with the governor’s office and the state legislature to engineer solutions to the state’s dire shortage of affordable housing. The recent session saw the creation of some game-changing approaches to funding, among other advances and reforms, which the state REALTORS® supported with their first big social media buy. An Issues Mobilization Grant helped make it possible.

With support from an Issues Mobilization Grant, the Utah Association of REALTORS® was able to convince state lawmakers that impact fees imposed on new development were not a rational source of funding for local schools – and would actually exacerbate the affordable housing crisis. Sustainable growth, the REALTORS® argue, will come from smart regional planning.

The population of Utah is expected to double – yes, double – by the year 2040, and the state is already feeling a housing crunch. With the help of Utah REALTORS® and the support of Issues Mobilization Grants, Utah has found a way to incentivize solutions to its growing shortage rather than strong-arming municipalities with mandates.

When seeking re-election to the Sandy City Council it was a no brainer for SLBR to apply for and receive the 1,000th IE to help ensure re-election to a third term in office.
